Some conservatives say they hope U.S. troops remain in Iraq indefinitely as a permanent presences in the Middle East.

A permanent U.S. military presence in Iraq provides Israel some additional protection - which is paramount to the neo-cons at the AEI, and as an added bonus gives the U.S. effective control of Iraqi material assets. Having the second largest deposits of oil sitting within your(our?) borders is too powerful a resource to be left to those that rightly own it. I'm sure we'll prove good stewards of Iraq's petrochemical wealth.
